1. Project Overview

In modern clinical environments, Mobile Workstations (Medical Carts) are essential for Point-of-Care (POC) nursing, bedside charting, and medication dispensing. A leading medical equipment integrator approached us to develop a robust, integrated power system capable of driving multiple peripherals with different voltage requirements while ensuring 100% uptime.

2. The Challenge

The client’s high-end nursing carts required a sophisticated power architecture to support:

  • Diverse Voltage Needs: 12V DC for medical-grade monitors and thin clients, and 24V DC for motorized height-adjustment columns and specialized diagnostic tools.

  • Harsh Operating Cycles: Carts are used across three shifts (24/7), requiring fast charging and long cycle life.

  • Safety & Compliance: The system had to meet stringent medical safety standards (IEC 60601-1) to ensure patient and operator safety.


3. Our Solution: The Intelligent Dual-Output Power System

We engineered a custom LiFePO4 (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery system integrated with a smart power management module.

Technical Specifications:

  • Input: Universal AC 100V–240V (50/60Hz) with medical-grade isolation.

  • Dual Output: 

    Channel 1: 12V DC (Stable 10A) for computing and peripherals.

    Channel 2: 24V DC (Peak 8A) optimized for motorized lift actuators.


  • Battery Chemistry: LiFePO4 (3000+ deep discharge cycles).

  • Communication: SMBus/RS485 for real-time State-of-Charge (SoC) and Health (SoH) monitoring.

Key Features:

  • Seamless UPS Functionality: The system features a "Zero-Transfer Time" switch. When the AC cord is unplugged, the cart switches to battery power instantly without rebooting the onboard computer.

  • Fast Charging Technology: Achieves 90% charge in under 3 hours while simultaneously powering the cart’s equipment.

  • Smart BMS Protection: Integrated protection against over-charge, over-discharge, short-circuits, and thermal runaway.


4. The Results

The implementation of our power system transformed the client’s product performance:

  • 60% Weight Reduction: Improved cart maneuverability and reduced nurse fatigue.

  • Extended Service Life: The battery lifespan increased from 1 year (Lead-acid) to over 5 years, significantly lowering the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).

  • Increased Efficiency: Reduced downtime for charging allowed for more "time at the bedside" for healthcare providers.

  • Regulatory Success: Successfully passed all medical-grade EMC and safety certifications on the first attempt.
